Supporting Countries

AVAREF responds directly to the needs of African countries. Support is tailored to national priorities, identified through regular needs assessments, direct requests from member states, surveys, and feedback collected during AVAREF events and missions.

Capacity Strengthening

All AVAREF activities aim to strengthen the capacity of National Regulatory Authorities (NRAs) and National Ethics Committees (NECs).

Dedicated training programmes are developed to enhance regulatory oversight of clinical trials, including:

  • Thematic workshops and specialized technical sessions;
  • Hands-on practices for reviewers and inspectors;
  • Specialized webinars for continuous learning.

Optimization Missions

AVAREF conducts Optimization Missions to strengthen national clinical research ecosystems. During these missions, all key stakeholders are engaged — regulatory authorities, investigators, ethics committees, and research institutions — to identify strengths, address gaps, and develop practical improvement plans.

Follow-up support ensures sustained progress and quality improvement.

These missions are conducted in accordance with:

  • ICH-GCP standards;
  • National regulatory and ethical frameworks;
  • WHO benchmarking tools;
  • AVAREF and international guidelines.
